Teaching style

I believe in the value of musical interpretation.  Right from the start, I encourage students to express themselves musically, often by working on improvisation. I try my best to make our lessons fun, creative and effective. For example, for young children I use eurhythmics (music and movement) to teach note values, a steady pulse and rhythm. If the child enjoys imaginative music making, I use graphic scores to create musical stories.

Many of my students take piano exams.  85% of my students have passed the ABRSM Piano Exam with merit or distinction in recent years. (100 % pass rate)   I also teach music theory to prepare students who are looking to go beyond grade 5.

I'm also keen to help students who'd like to play pieces that aren't on the exam syllabus.

Young Boy Playing the Piano

Lesson for Adult

It's often said that children learn faster than adults, but it's not quite that simple. Adults often have high motivation, concentration, analytical thinking skill and patience which are all advantages when it comes to learning.

I do my best to help adult students achieve their individual goals. This could be passing exams, playing favourite pieces of classical, popular or film music, or learning the basics including reading music.

We occasionally meet up and play to each other in a friendly environment.
